Kathleen Hamilton's Obituary
Kathleen (Kitty) Hamilton (nee Wanser), formerly of O'Neill, Nebraska died on February 8, 2024. She passed peacefully with her daughters and grandchildren present, alongside a treasured hospice nurse and death doula.
Kitty was born on January 2, 1947, in O'Neill and was celebrated as Holt County's 1947 New Year's baby. As the youngest of eight children to Sheila and Max Wanser, her name was a gift from her siblings, her parents being plum out of names by that point.
Kitty's early years were split between O'Neill and Ewing. She attended Assumption Academy and St Mary's High Schools. Her thirst for knowledge led her to St Mary's College in Omaha to study chemistry, a field that would define her professional life. She was an early blaze on the feminist trail, and though her family questioned why a woman would need a college degree, they would later admire her foresight.
Kitty's journey took her across the United States, from St Louis to San Francisco, Phoenix to Denver, leaving a trail of memories and friendships. Professionally, she worked in laboratory sales and as a hospital medical technician and administrator.
However, her greatest achievement and source of pride were her three daughters whom she raised in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She raised her girls to be go-getters, to be positive, and to work hard. "We can do this" and "let's get tough" were phrases often heard in Kitty's home, and her daughters' friends often came over to seek out Kitty's pep talks.
Her large extended family was a source of loyalty, pride and fun. Forever the baby sister, she kept life-long friendships with her brothers and sister. Kitty was delighted and interested in her niece's and nephew's lives (and eventually their children's lives), and they in turn always enjoyed having her at the party and entertaining her questions.
Kitty's legacy continues through her family: daughter Nicolle Hamilton and grandson Elliott in Brisbane, CA; daughter Michelle Pearce, son-in-law Roger, and grandchildren Evie and Emmitt in Brighton, CO; and daughter Megan Berman and son-in-law Joel in Menlo Park, CA.
Kitty's life wasn't easy or perfect, but she did a damn fine job of living. She embraced life's challenges with grace, and left an indelible mark on those she loved. Her positive spirit was felt by her loved ones all the way to the end.
A service in honor of Kitty's life will be held on July 5th, 2024 10:30AM at St. Patrick's Church in O'Neill. Live streaming is available at https://holtboydcatholic.org/kathleenhamilton. Reception will immediately follow at Handlebend (215 E Douglas St)
