Philip Richard Coburn's Obituary
Philip Richard Coburn, a man whose love for history and aviation knew no bounds, passed away on December 14, 2023 in Aurora, Colorado. Born on May 26, 1937 in Brooklyn, Iowa to Margaret and Kenneth Coburn. He was the beloved husband of Marie Coburn who preceded him in death on January 13th of the same year.
Phil's passion for history led him to become the Historian at Fort Clark Springs in Brackettville, Texas where he dedicated over two decades of his life preserving and sharing stories from the past. His love for airplanes was ignited by his mother Margaret and he considered them to be among the most beautiful and magical creations in the world. The Corsair held a special place in his heart and he made sure to pass down this love to his family members, especially his grandchildren.
Phil was a proud veteran who served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Ranger aircraft carrier during his service in the military; Phil had an unwavering dedication towards both country and family throughout his lifetime. His marriage to Marie lasted an incredible 53 years - setting an example of enduring love that will continue to inspire generations.
In addition to being a devoted husband and father figure; Phil also found joy through building model airplanes, attending air shows whenever possible as well as indulging himself into golfing activities while capturing moments through the photography lens. Phil’s love for God inspired him to serve the local church in Brackettville. A voracious reader with a penchant for storytelling; Phil's ability to weave captivating narratives will be dearly missed by all those who were fortunate enough to hear them firsthand.
Phil is survived by his brother Dennis; daughters Janie and Stephanie; son Norman along with numerous Grandchildren including Suzanne, Melissa, Royce, Elizabeth, Shawn, and Brontë; Great-Grandchildren, Savon, Zion, Shaykyra, Tyler, Carly, Jackson, Zoey, Jovie, Chloe, Sofi, Brady, Jaimie, Kayden, Tyler, James, Liam, Xander, Joshua, Logan, and Blaze; and Great-Great Grandson Bodie, his Niece Briana as well as many more family members and his friends.
On January 5th ,2024 Phil’s ashes were spread alongside those of his wife Marie during a San Diego Burial at sea ceremony off the California coast which included military honors accompanied by playing of taps – fulfilling their shared wish of resting together eternally within the Pacific Ocean waters they loved so much.
Philip Richard Coburn leaves behind cherished memories that will forever remain engraved within our hearts - may we find solace knowing that he has now reunited once again with his beloved wife Marie.
